H. Frank Fizer, 27, motorman, saved Thomas Bowen, 32, foreman, and seven other men from a tunnel cave-in, Santa Barbara, California, April 7, 1912. Fizer, while taking a train of muck cars out of the tunnel, discovered that a cave-in, which would cause water to back to the face of the workings, was imminent at a point about two miles from the entrance. In order to warn the other men, he waded back in the tunnel a distance of over 4,400 feet, through water from 12 to 20 inches deep, against a current of 2.5 m.p.h. All escaped. The cave-in closed the tunnel three hours after they got out. 8355-685
