H. Guy Brown, 27, civil engineer, died attempting to save Joseph Freer, 11, laborer, from suffocation Charleston, South Carolina, April 18, 1911. Brown descended through a 20-inch opening into a manhole of a sewer where Joseph had been overcome by gas and was lying at the bottom, about 10 feet below the surface of the ground. He was overcome before he could aid Joseph and was taken from the manhole by other men, but he could not be revived. Joseph was dead when he was gotten out. 6612-622
