H. Harcourt Heal, 20, teacher, saved Eva L. Maguire, 18, from drowning, Guysborough, Nova Scotia, December 31, 1914. (See case of FREDERICK C. BROWN.) Miss Maguire skated into the open water with Miss Heal. She drifted away from the ice and was submerged several times. Heal skated 400 feet to the edge of the ice, where a group of men had gathered. He removed his overcoat but not his skates, jumped into the water, and swam to Miss Maguire. He reached under the surface, grasped her hair, drew her up, and swam 23 feet with her toward the ice. A man threw an overcoat to Heal and drew him and Miss Maguire to the ice with it. Miss Maguire had swallowed considerable water and was very weak. Heal was nearly exhausted. 15200-1541
