H. Ollie Rogers saved Arthur B. Carmack from suffocation, Curve, Tennessee, August 31, 1912. A boy was overcome by carbon dioxide in a cistern while he was cleaning the cistern. Carmack, 32, farmer, who thought the boy had simply fallen, had men lower him to the bottom. He tied a rope around the boy, and men raised the boy to the surface. They tended to the boy and did not lower the rope to Carmack at once, and he was overcome. The men then realized what had caused the trouble. Rogers, 30, bank cashier, had himself lowered into the cistern, standing with his foot in a loop in the rope. He tied the rope around Carmack, and the men raised him to the surface, then the rope was lowered to Rogers, and he was raised, standing with his foot in the loop. Carmack and the boy were unconscious for 30 minutes. Rogers had a headache until the next morning. 9279-1041
