H. Samuel McGowan, 20, student, attempted to save Robert M. Wilson, 3, from being killed by an automobile, Woodsdale, West Virginia, October 3, 1918. Robert stood on a street a foot from the curb when an automobile, out of control of the driver, turned a sharp corner 40 feet from him and proceeded directly toward him at a speed of 15 m.p.h. McGowan, who stood on the sidewalk four feet from Robert, realized Robert’s plight when the automobile was 18 feet from Robert, and he lunged about three feet toward him with his hands extended to grasp him. He failed to reach Robert, and the automobile, a wheel of which ran over the curb, struck Robert and McGowan at the same time. Robert was carried against a telephone pole by the automobile and was crushed to death. McGowan was knocked down, and his left thigh, left forearm, and a rib were fractured. 19386-1506
