Hamdey Joseph Alley, Jr., saved James P. Arlowe from being struck by a train, Chicago, Illinois, October 14, 1967. James, 2, wandered onto a railroad track and was standing between the rails when a freight train approached. The engineer sounded warning signals and applied brakes. As the train began slowing gradually, Alley, 34, railroad fireman, left his position in the cab and made his way to a footboard at the front of the locomotive. The train was within 50 feet of James and was traveling at a decreasing speed of 15 m.p.h. when Alley jumped from the footboard onto the ground alongside the track and immediately began running. He then moved onto the track to a position between the rails and reached James when the engine was within 18 feet of them. Without breaking stride, Alley scooped James up in his arms and veered from the path of the locomotive, which passed them and stopped about 35 feet beyond. 49925-5434
