Hardy Murr died attempting to save Cap L. Machen from drowning, Carrizo Springs, Texas, November 28, 1990. On horseback, Machen, 23, was helping to round up cattle on a ranch when a stray steer entered a stock pond. Following it, Machen fell into the water when his horse lost its footing. He struggled in the water. Murr, 43, rancher, the passenger in a nearby helicopter that had been contracted to assist in cattle operations from the air, directed the pilot to hover over Machen. Murr then jumped from the helicopter into the pond in an attempt to save Machen. A struggle between the men ensued. Both Murr and Machen submerged and drowned.
