Harley W. Pullen, 12, schoolboy, rescued Max L. Doolittle, 24, farmer, from a runaway, Big Creek, Mississippi, May 29, 1922. A mule which Doolittle was riding sideways reared and caused him to slip off its back. With one of Doolittle’s feet caught in a trace chain, the frightened mule ran off at a gallop, dragging Doolittle about 1,500 feet over a plowed field and a road. Harley then reached the mule after having run 500 feet and attempted to grasp the bridle. He missed it and was struck on the chest by the shoulder of the mule or its foot and knocked to the ground. The mule took several steps past him and stopped, and Harley, who was uninjured, went to the mule, seized the bridle, and released Doolittle. Doolittle was disabled for five days from his injuries. 23002-1826
