Harold E. Werner, 26, salesman, died attempting to save John Van Ek, 34, insurance agent, from drowning, Gelatt, California, August 8, 1930. While swimming in Donner Lake, Van Ek got into distress in water 10 feet deep 25 feet from shore. Werner, who was swimming farther from shore, swam 100 feet to him. Van Ek threw his arms around Werner’s neck, and both were immediately submerged and drowned.
