Harold Edward Quinn, 21, pressman’s apprentice, saved Marguerite E. Baker, 15, from drowning, Winchester, Massachusetts, August 13, 1920. Marguerite was thrown from an overloaded raft when it sank under the surface in Lower Mystic Lake. She was 85 feet from the bank, where the water was eight or 10 feet deep. Marguerite grasped a girl companion who attempted to help her, and they were submerged momentarily. Marguerite’s companion called for someone to save Marguerite. Quinn, who was shortwinded, swam six to eight feet to the girls and took hold of Marguerite, but as he started to swim toward the raft, Marguerite’s companion took hold of him around the neck. He rapidly became tired, the weight of the girls retarding his progress, and in response to his call for help a small boy reached them, grasped Quinn in an attempt to aid, and caused all to go under the surface twice. The boy and Marguerite’s companion then left them. Quinn with great effort struggled to the raft with Marguerite, after a swim of 10 feet, and in a dazed condition was helped upon it with Marguerite. 21060-1792
