Harold H. Crady, 17, student, saved Elsie L. Bataille, 4, from drowning, Ocean Breeze, New York, August 31, 1921. Elsie fell into New Creek and drifted to a point 20 feet from the bank, where the water was seven feet deep. Although his legs were badly crippled and he could swim poorly only with his arms, Harold threw himself from a rowboat at the bank and swam to Elsie, who was then submerged. He took hold of her hair and swam with difficulty 20 feet to a log at the bank. Much fatigued, he grasped at the log, but his hand slipped and he went slightly under water. He swam with great effort several more strokes toward a ladder attached to the log and then let himself sink to the bottom and crawled two or three feet under water to the ladder. Grasping the ladder, he lifted Elsie upward, and she was drawn out by a woman on the bank. Harold then drew himself upon the log. 22113-1885
