Harold M. Starkey died attempting to help save Brandon W. McDaniel and Carl J. Parker, Jr., from drowning, Uhrichsville, Ohio, July 8, 1987. Brandon, 15, and Carl, 14, were struggling in turbulent water at the base of a weir in Big Stillwater Creek. Starkey, 60, auto parts salesman, ran to the creek from his nearby home. He waded into the creek and began to swim toward Brandon and Carl, as did his nephew, who had arrived at the scene. Starkey and his nephew swam to within 10 feet of Brandon before they submerged in the rough water. They drowned, as did Carl. Brandon was rescued by others.
