Harold Stanley Vernet assisted in an attempt to save Frank S. Angell from drowning, Block Island, Rhode Island, August 15, 1924. While swimming in deep water in the Atlantic Ocean, Angell, 54, lawyer, became helpless and was drifting 400 feet from shore. Harold, 17, student, waded 25 feet and then swam 375 feet through very rough water to Angell, who was almost unconscious. Harold and another boy reached Angell at the same time, grasped him by the ankles, and swam with him to within 150 feet of shore. A large wave then separated them, they were tossed about, and the other boy was thrown against a rock. Harold regained his hold on Angell with difficulty and swam with him 75 feet closer to shore. A man then met them and aided Harold in taking Angell to shore. Angell could not be revived. 24556-1977
