Harold W. Stephens helped to rescue Miguel B. Salazar from burning, Houston, Texas, July 13, 1991. Salazar, 38, was trapped in the burning wreckage of his pickup truck after a four-vehicle freeway accident. Having witnessed the accident, Stephens, 54, businessman, ran to the vehicles, where he saw Salazar extend a hand through a small opening of the wreckage and heard him shout for help. As the cab of the pickup was not accessible from the pavement, Stephens mounted the hood of one of the cars involved in the accident, although that car was also burning. He seized Salazar and started to free him, but Salazar became wedged in the opening. Another man joined Stephens on the hood and helped him to remove Salazar completely. The men then dragged Salazar away from the wreckage moments before an explosion occurred at the pickup. Salazar was hospitalized three weeks for treatment of second-degree burns and other injuries. Stephens sustained lesser burns to exposed portions of his body, and he recovered.
