Harry Amster, 23, meat dealer, attempted to save A. Fay Bennett, 2, from burning, Clarkdale, Arizona, April 27, 1915. Flames were seen issuing from a one-story frame house in which Fay and a three-year-old brother were alone. A man and several women, including Fay’s mother, reached the house, but flames then covered the walls and ceiling of the kitchen, in which the children were, and no person ventured into it. Amster reached the scene and learned that Fay was in the house, and he ran, stooping, through the kitchen door, from the top of which flames were then sweeping. Unable to see his way, he groped around the kitchen and returned to the outside. He then wrapped a tarpaulin of canvas around himself and re-entered, but he was struck on the head by a falling piece of burning debris and left the kitchen again. His clothing was scorched, his neck and face were blistered, and his hands were severely burned. He was disabled 27 days but recovered. The house was destroyed, and the children were burned to death. 14712-1250
