Harry L. Shryock, Jr., died saving William J. Crose from possibly being shot, Polson, Montana, January 11, 1984. William, 13, was being held hostage by an armed assailant, who demanded an aircraft and pilot to get away. Shryock, 64, retired Air Force pilot, volunteered to fly the plane, provided that he could take William’s place. After freeing William, the assailant entered the airplane with Shryock. Wounded by a sharpshooter, the assailant then shot and killed Shryock.
