Harry T. Young saved Evelyn J. H. Riley, 17; Bertha L. Johnston, 18; Mabel M. Minz, 23, and Katherine Shea, 22, from drowning, Eagle Bay, New York, August 23, 1916. The four women became distressed and clung to each other in Eagle Bay in Fourth Lake of Fulton Chain Lakes, 100 feet from shore, where the water was seven feet deep. Young, 28, boat tender, who was dressed, waded and swam to them and grasped Evelyn. She grasped him, and he sank. He broke her hold, rose to the surface, and grasped Evelyn and Miss Johnston. Miss Johnston put one arm over his neck, and he sank again. Both women then clutched his shirt. He made several lunges, broke away from them, and rose to the surface after swallowing water. Young then grasped them again and swam about eight feet with them to wadable water. The two women were then taken to shore in a launch which had just arrived. Young swam two strokes to Miss Shea, who had become separated from the other women, grasped her, and dragged her a few feet toward shore. He then lifted her to the gunwale of a rowboat, held her on it, and waded to shore. Young’s struggle with the women enabled Mrs. Minz to reach wadable water, and others took her to shore. 16994-1407
