Harry V. Phillips died attempting to save Miriam Horne from drowning, South Jacksonville, Florida, August 10, 1926. Miriam, 11, fell from a pier into the St. Johns River, where the water was10 feet deep, and clung to a plank that was submerged. Phillips, 44, switchman, almost fully clothed, dropped from the pier and swam 15 feet to her. She put her arm on his shoulder, and Phillips tried to swim toward the pier but was carried farther away by the current. When they had drifted together to a point 250 feet from the pier, Phillips disappeared. Miriam drifted 50 feet farther and sank. Both were drowned.
