Harvey A. J. Muir, Sr., 46, tire shop proprietor, saved Jeanne, 15, and Rudolph Carpenter, meat dealer, 45, from drowning, Spencer, Massachusetts, June 29, 1947. A motorboat in which Jeanne, her father Rudolph, and another man were riding on Stiles Reservoir capsized, pinning Carpenter momentarily in his seat and throwing the others into water 25 feet deep 300 feet from an island. Jeanne swam to her father, who rose dazed and with a badly lacerated hand, and they clung to each other and struggled. Stopping his motorboat near the other craft, Muir, who was overweight and short-winded, dived and swam 18 feet to the Carpenters, separated them with a blow on their arms, and towed Jeanne 10 feet to the capsized boat. He swam back to Carpenter, jerked his wrist free when Carpenter grasped it, and towed Carpenter to the capsized boat. The other man drowned. Without resting, Muir swam to his boat where, too weak to climb into it, he was pulled aboard by others. Throwing one end of a rope to Carpenter, Muir pulled him to his boat and with aid lifted Carpenter into it. Jeanne was picked up by a man in a rowboat. Muir was badly winded and sustained minor bruises. 41093-3525
