Harvey D. Spaulding, 42, newspaper circulation manager, died attempting to save Johanna M. Hensler, 34, from drowning, Bridgeport, Michigan, August 1, 1915. Mrs. Hensler, who could not swim, became distressed in a hole in the Cass River. Spaulding, who was weak from rheumatism and did not have full use of his arms, swam to her and, calling for a boat, seized her. Both sank and rose several times, Spaulding striving to support Mrs. Hensler and at the same time trying to frustrate her efforts to seize him. When the boat got near them, both were beneath the surface, but Mrs. Hensler rose and was pulled to the boat and saved. Spaulding was drowned. 15179-1194
