Harvey H. Rogers attempted to save Chalfant Greves and saved Elbert E. Davidson from suffocation, Howbert, Colorado, August 13, 1924. Davidson, 24, ranch hand, was overcome by gas while climbing a ladder in a shaft which gave entrance to a cave 85 feet underground, and he fell 15 feet to the bottom of the cave. Greves, 25, student, and Rogers, 24, rancher, were in the cave, and Rogers said that Davidson had been killed, and he climbed out to get a rope. About 10 minutes later Greves, while climbing the ladder, fell from near the top to the bottom. Rogers returned with a rope and learned of Greves’s fall. He then dropped one end of the rope into the shaft, and although efforts were made by his cousin, the only other person then present, to prevent his again entering the cave, Rogers held his breath and descended the ladder. He found Greves dead. Davidson then showed signs of life, and Rogers tied the rope to him, climbed to the top, and with great effort pulled him out of the cave. Davidson was revived. Greves was removed from the cave later, but he was dead. 24667-1998
