Harvey T. Armstrong saved Frances E. Witter and Lola C. Fry and helped attempt to save Delores A. Estes from burning, Ocala, Florida, February 28, 1983. Mrs. Witter, 76, and Mrs. Fry, 67, were unconscious in their burning car following a fiery 22-vehicle accident on an interstate highway. Armstrong, 27, police officer, ran to the car and removed the women through a window. He and others then ran toward a car in which Mrs. Estes, 55, was located, but a sudden explosive force of flame blew him backward, inflicting severe burns. Mrs. Witter, Mrs. Fry, and Mrs. Estes all recovered from minor injuries. Armstrong was hospitalized for three weeks for treatment of second- and third-degree burns to 45 percent of his body.
