Hattie F. Garrelts rescued Carl Meier from an enraged bull, Elgin, Illinois, November 25, 1941. While Meier, 74, farmhand, was standing in a barn yard, a bull knocked him to the ground and then repeatedly butted him, shoving him 40 feet. Meier got hold of a ring in the bull’s nose. Mrs. Garrelts, who was not robust, got an ax, ran to the bull, and struck its head with the ax. The bull jerked free from Meier’s hold and backed 10 feet. Mrs. Garrelts then aided Meier to walk 65 feet to an exit and out of the yard. Meier sustained serious injuries but recovered. 39326-3254
