Hazel Irene Webb saved Helen Shellhammer from drowning, Ashtabula, Ohio, July 13, 1925. While Miss Shellhammer, 22, was wading in Lake Erie, she stepped into deep water 330 feet from shore. Miss Webb, 21, student nurse, swam 20 feet to her, and Miss Shellhammer threw her arms around Miss Webb’s neck and wrapped her legs around her in a tight hold. After being submerged several times, Miss Webb got free and swam 18 feet to a pier to recover her breath. Miss Shellhammer soon lost consciousness, and Miss Webb swam 18 feet to her and swam with her to the pier. Miss Shellhammer was revived. 25495-2104
