Hazel R. Riter, 20, saleswoman, attempted to save Henry C. Folsom, 14, schoolboy, from drowning, Armstrong, Oklahoma, August 24, 1916. Henry, who attempted to swim across the Blue River, let down 22 feet from the bank, found he was in water over his depth, became frightened, and struggled. Miss Riter swam 10 feet to him, and he grasped her around the neck, and they went under the surface together. They returned to the surface, and Miss Riter called for help and made an unsuccessful attempt to break Henry’s hold. A man then came to them, separated them, and in turn rescued Miss Riter and Henry. 19890-1502
