Heinrich Wentland attempted to save Albert Russell from an impending explosion, Bewdley, Ontario, October 19, 1971. At night, Russell, 53, truckdriver, was trapped in the cab of an overturned tractor-trailer from which diesel fuel, gasoline, and stove oil were escaping. Wentland, 44, steel cropper, saw that Russell had climbed part way through the window on the upperside of the cab. The engine still was running. Fearing an explosion was imminent, Wentland reached into the cab and tried in vain to shut off the engine. He then withdrew and took hold of Russell to pull him out. An explosion occurred, knocking Wentland backward and setting his jacket afire. He removed the jacket; but the flames on the rig were so extensive that they prevented him from returning to the cab to get Russell, who perished in the fire. Wentland recovered from burns he had sustained.
