Helen F. Dodge, 11, schoolgirl, saved Dorothy A. Winter, 10, from drowning, Ocean Gate, New Jersey, July 18, 1919. Dorothy fell from a pier into the Toms River, where the water was seven feet deep. Helen, who had the use of but one arm and was fully dressed, jumped from the pier into the water beside Dorothy. With Dorothy holding to her at the back of her waist, Helen swam six feet to a pile which supported the pier, and the two girls held to the pile. A man arrived on the pier and drew Dorothy upon it, and another man reached Helen in a rowboat and took her to the bank. 19866-165
