Helen Gill Geist, 37, bookkeeper, died attempting to save Virginia A. Cooch, 2, from being killed by an autotruck, Newark, Delaware, May 29, 1923. Virginia started across a street when an autotruck was approaching at a speed of 7 or 8 m.p.h. Mrs. Geist, who was on the sidewalk, ran after Virginia, extending her right hand to take hold of Virginia. The truck was swerved from its course, and its speed was reduced to 3 or 4 m.p.h., but Mrs. Geist was struck after she had run about 30 feet, reaching for Virginia. The wheels of the truck passed over Mrs. Geist, and she was instantly killed. Virginia was knocked down between the wheels, and the truck passed over her. She was uninjured except for abrasions on her face. 23331-1856
