Helen V. Nelson, 12, schoolgirl, saved Etheline E. Geschwindt, 9, from drowning, Dubois, Pennsylvania, February 21, 1915. Etheline broke through the ice on a pool in Juniata Creek, 100 feet from the bank, where the water was six feet deep. Helen crawled to her and seized her, but Helen also broke through. Keeping hold of Etheline, she tried to climb out, but the ice broke under her. She finally succeeded in crawling onto firm ice and pulling Etheline out after her.
