Henry A. Scheerer rescued Larry A. Bell from burning, Fremont, Ohio, April 28, 1992. Bell, 41, remained in the driver’s seat of his van after a highway accident in which the van exploded into flame. Scheerer, 55,technician, lived near the scene and ran to the van after hearing the accident. Despite intense heat and growing flames, Scheerer reached into the van through the opened driver’s door and grasped Bell by the arm but was unable to maintain his hold. He then extended his right arm into the van,grasped Bell about the shoulder, and pulled him from the vehicle. Scheerer aided Bell away from the van moments before its interior was engulfed inflame. Bell required lengthy hospitalization for extensive and severe burns. Scheerer recovered from a lesser burn to his right arm.
