Henry A. Sorell saved James Ladd from suffocation, Williams, Arizona, March 3, 1921. Ladd, 70, laborer, was lowered on a rope to the bottom of a prospective cesspool, 74 feet deep, to remove a man who bad been overcome by gas following an explosion. Ladd had felt sure no gas was present and refused to have the rope tied around him. After Ladd had tied the rope to the man, he was overcome. The other man was drawn up, but he was dead. Another man had previously descended but had been overcome and drawn out unconscious. Many men who gathered at the hole feared to enter for Ladd. Sorell, 38, mail messenger, aware of the effects of the gas on the others, was lowered, tied to a rope. He quickly tied another rope around Ladd. Both men were then drawn to the top, Sorell being weak but conscious. Ladd regained consciousness 24 hours later. 21344-1738
