Henry Arthur Craft, Sr., helped attempt to rescue Tom R. Burks, Jr., from burning, Ida, Louisiana, February 9, 1997. Burks, 70, was the driver of an automobile that, before dawn, left the roadway and crashed into trees, trapping him inside. Flames broke out in the engine area and grew. Two motorists, Craft, 58, instrument foreman, and his brother, drove upon the scene and stopped. Craft gained entry to the car through its left rear door; fully inside, he attempted to free Burks as flames spread to the front passenger seat. After Craft exited the car, his brother entered to resume the attempt, and the men were successful in freeing Burks from the wreckage. They pulled him out and carried him away from the car before its interior was engulfed by flame. Burks was burned and died of injury received in the crash.
