Henry B. Scrivens helped to save Shelley Hammonds from suffocation, Brooksville, Florida, July 7, 1977. While working a huge pile of damp gravel, Hammonds, 26, was trapped when a funnel developed as the result of the gravel descending through a chute at the bottom of the pile. Scrivens, 49, shipping department foreman, jumped into the funnel and tried to hold Hammonds back; but both sank farther into the gravel until its flow was stopped. Only the face of Scrivens was then uncovered; but he used his arms to create a narrow air shaft to the mouth and nose of Hammonds, whose head was at the level of Scrivens’ stomach. While rescue operations were going on, Scrivens kept the air shaft open despite gravel sliding down onto him. Hammonds and Scrivens were in the gravel more than two hours before workmen uncovered them. 55978-6316
