Henry C. Bell, Jr., 11, schoolboy, saved N. Bernice Tryon, 12, from drowning, Portland, Connecticut, August 13, 1918. Bernice became distressed while swimming in Jobs Pond 25 feet from the bank, where the water was 20 feet deep. She struggled and sank under the surface, and Henry swam 20 feet to her, reaching her as she rose. Bernice grasped him and held to him, and Henry swam with her 15 feet toward the bank. They went under the surface twice, but Henry continued swimming to a woman, who stood in chin deep water and took Bernice to the bank. Henry swam to the bank but was nearly exhausted. 19218-1612
