Henry Denenkamp, 39, waiter, died attempting to save Marie L. Carton and Ruth DuBois, both 15, from drowning, Deal Beach, New Jersey, August 22, 1919. While wading in the Atlantic Ocean, Marie and Ruth were carried by a wave into deep water 30 feet from shore. They struggled and bobbed up and down several times. Denenkamp waded a short distance from shore and plunged under the surface toward the girls. He rose within arm’s length of Marie but was doubled up and motionless. The two girls were carried by their struggles and a wave to wadable water, where they got a footing. Denenkamp was soon taken to shore but could not be revived. 20057-1695
