Henry Garfield Roy, 34, farmer, attempted to save Beatrice E. Bennett, 16, from drowning, St. Johnsbury Center, Vermont, July 2, 1921. Beatrice stepped into deep water while wading in the Passumpsic River 50 feet from the bank. She struggled and was carried along by the current. Roy waded from the bank into deep water and swam 30 feet to Beatrice, who had drifted 10 feet farther from the bank. She grasped him around the neck, taking him under the surface, and he rose and started to swim with her but sank again. He was unable to rise, and under water he grasped a rope which was flung to him from the bank, became separated from Beatrice, and was drawn to the bank in a dazed and helpless condition. He recovered. Beatrice was drowned. 22053-1939
