Henry McLaughlin died after helping to save Adele B. Lombardi from drowning, Middletown, Rhode Island, July 26, 1931. While jumping waves and swimming in the Atlantic Ocean, Mrs. Lombardi, 25, became fatigued in rough water, and she struggled frantically in waves three feet high and against an undertow. McLaughlin, 25, carpenter, waded into the rough water and then swam 20 feet to her. She threw her arms around his neck, and without trying to free himself, he swam 25 feet toward shore, his head low in the water most of the time. Other swimmers met him then and took Mrs. Lombardi to the shore. McLaughlin’s further actions were not observed, but a little later he was seen to fall unconscious in shallow water close to shore. He could not be revived. 31391-2658
