Henry Niedenfuehr, 60, grocer, saved Loraine L. Riget, 24, from drowning, New Athens, Illinois, July 4, 1923. While swimming in the Kaskaskia River 28 feet from the bank, Mrs. Riget lost self control when she tried to touch bottom in water 12 feet deep. Niedenfuehr, who had been swimming and diving and was tired, swam 15 feet to Mrs. Riget, grasped her hand, and began to swim toward the bank. She grasped his wrists, but while they were under the surface momentarily, he jerked away from her. Niedenfuehr pushed her eight feet nearer the bank, and Mrs. Riget then seized Niedenfuehr around the neck, forcing him under the surface. Unable to get to the surface, Niedenfuehr swam 12 feet with her to wadable water. Niedenfuehr was almost exhausted. 23414-2038
