Henry Sherman Potter, Jr., saved Omar E. Meyer, Jr., from drowning, Sandusky, Ohio, January 30, 1926. While Omar, 10, was skating on Sandusky Bay, the ice broke under him, and he went into water eight feet deep. Henry, 13, schoolboy, who was dressed and wore skates, crawled 10 feet toward Omar on thin ice but broke through about five feet from him. His fall broke the ice between them, and Henry then broke the thin ice with his elbow back to firm ice and got on it. Omar swam toward him, and when Omar was within six feet of firm ice, he could go no farther. Henry then tossed the end of his sweater to Omar and pulled him on firm ice. 26798-2214
