Henry T. O’Donnell, 11, schoolboy, attempted to save H. Blanchard Whitworth, 11, from drowning, Revere, Massachusetts, January 15, 1913. Blanchard and Henry were skating on an abandoned clay pit, in parts of which was very deep water. Blanchard skated toward a part of the pit which he and Henry had previously avoided because of the weak ice, and when he got to the thin ice, he broke through in water eight feet deep. He was 20 feet from the nearest bank. Henry took off his skates and went to the bank opposite Blanchard. No effort was being made to aid Blanchard, and a man urged Henry to rescue him. Henry was not of robust build, and his left arm was atrophied. He feared to go on the ice, but he got a hockey stick and walked to a point about five feet from Blanchard. He extended the stick, and Blanchard grasped it. When Henry began to pull, the ice broke, and he fell into the water and went beneath the surface. He could not swim, but he kicked and beat the water. He went down a second time and came up. Blanchard sank and was drowned. After Henry had been in the water five minutes, men with planks aided him to the bank. He was weak from fright and became hysterical. He was disabled 14 days. 10455-958
