Herbert Aaron Friedlich saved Raymond Kraft from an impending fatal fall, Glacier Park, Montana, August 6, 1919. Kraft, 21, clerk, alone ascended a mountain known as Pinnacle Wall for 350 feet, and in attempting to cross a glacier 30 feet wide, he lost his footing and slid about 75 feet, injuring his ankle. He then attempted to descend the mountain on narrow ledges and finally reached a short ledge two feet wide. Kraft could go no farther and was greatly frightened. The face of the mountain below him sloped down for 150 feet at an angle of about 20 degrees from a perpendicular and was bare of vegetation. Friedlich, 26, lawyer, with extreme caution and difficulty climbed toward Kraft from the base of the mountain. At two points in the ascent, where there were projections to surmount, he was forced to lean back from handholds, swing out with his feet unsupported, and pull himself up. He reached Kraft after climbing 250 feet and with great difficulty helped him to descend. Two and a half hours were required to reach Kraft and descend with him. 19833-1726
