Herbert Daniel York died attempting to save Robert D. Van Watt, Jr., from drowning, Presque Isle, Maine, August 28, 1977. When Robert, 14, started to go under while swimming in deep water in a dredged section of the Aroostook River, he grasped another boy who, after both submerged, broke away and surfaced alone. York, 43, farmhand, was fishing nearby and, without removing any of his attire, entered the water. Swimming to where Robert had gone under, York submerged. He then was seen at the surface briefly but went under again and remained submerged. Both York and Robert drowned. 55931-6326
