Herbert E. Varney saved Jerry A. Low from drowning, Wells Beach, Maine, September 1, 1913. Low, 52, foreman, was carried away from shore by an undertow while he was swimming in the Atlantic Ocean, and the undertow was so strong that he could not swim against it. Varney, 22, shoe cutter, who was dressed except coat, vest, and shoes, waded about 50 feet and swam about 125 feet to Low. Low became unconscious about when Varney reached him. Varney grasped Low but had much difficulty swimming with him against the undertow. He swam 60 feet toward shore, and then a rope was thrown to him, and he and Low were pulled in and helped to shore. Varney lay on the beach in exhaustion for an hour. Low was unconscious three hours and was confined to bed eight weeks. 12024-1108
