Herbert Mitchell, 13, schoolboy, attempted to save Gail L. Ramsey, 9, from drowning, DeLand, Florida, August 23, 1964. Gail, who could not swim, was wading near the bank of the St. Johns River when a wave from a passing motorboat carried her into water eight feet deep, where she was submerged briefly. Herbert entered the water and swam to Gail, who then was 20 feet from the bank. Her 11-year-old brother Jerry, a poor swimmer, followed. Gail grasped Herbert around the neck. Jerry arrived and, tired from his swim, also grasped Herbert. All were submerged, surfacing separately after Gail and Jerry released their holds. Eugene Griffin was attracted and entered the water fully clothed. Impeded by his attire, he swam to Gail, who was alternately sinking and rising. Gail, Herbert, and Jerry all grasped Griffin around the neck. He was able to break Gail’s hold, but the boys forced him under water before releasing him. All three returned to the surface, where they remained afloat with difficulty. The current moved Gail farther from the bank. Miss Stefany Ann Yakots and Miss Joyce Marie Guthrie ran to the river, removed their shoes and entered the water. Miss Yakots swam to Herbert and thrust him to wadable water within five feet of the bank. She then extended a hand to Griffin and towed him 15 feet to wadable water. Swimming back to Jerry, Miss Yakots also towed him to wadable water. By that time Miss Guthrie, impeded greatly by a heavy shirt, had reached Gail, who was floating face down 30 feet from the bank.
