Hershal E. Eaglebarger, 25, instructor and solicitor, died attempting to save C. Edward Ley, 17, from drowning, South Bend, Indiana, June 16, 1907. After a boy’s failed attempt, Eaglebarger swam to Edward, who had become exhausted while swimming in the St. Joseph River 50 feet from the bank. Eaglebarger sank to the bottom just as he started to support Edward. The boy who had swum to Edward first went in for him again and effected the rescue. 2718-198
