Holly L. Garlitz rescued Nicholas K. Mensah from assault, State College, Pennsylvania, September 17, 1996. A woman armed with a rifle and a hunting knife concealed herself in a planting of trees and bushes in a corner of a large, open lawn on a university campus. Firing several times, she killed one student, grazed the backpacks of two others, and seriously wounded Mensah, 22, who was walking on a path several hundred feet away. Mensah fell to the ground. Walking on the same path, Ms. Garlitz, 22, college student, took cover behind a tree after seeing Mensah fallen. Concluding that Mensah remained vulnerable in his exposed position, Ms. Garlitz left her cover, hurried to him, and, grabbing him by an arm, dragged him to the tree. The sniper was disarmed by another student. Mensah was hospitalized for treatment of his gunshot wound, which required surgery.
