Homer J. Powers, 41, truck driver, attempted to save Edwin M. Morey, 73, oil house attendant, from burning, Charlotte, Michigan, August 15, 1930. Morey started a pump inside an oil house to fill a tank truck with gasoline. An explosion occurred inside the oil house, flames issued from the doorway, and dense smoke filled the structure. Powers, who was on the truck outside, heard Morey yell, and holding his breath, he immediately ran 20 feet into the oil house to Morey. He took hold of Morey, who was holding fast to a bench. Powers then had to take a breath and fell to the floor. Quickly getting to his feet, he started to carry Morey out, but he lost him before reaching the door. Powers was dazed but got out, having sustained serious burns that permanently disabled him. Morey followed him out, but he died from burns less than an hour later.
