Homer J. W. Ward saved John P. Davidson from drowning, Cheboygan, Michigan, June 25, 1914. Davidson, 72, stood on a boom of logs in the Cheboygan River to fish, and when a steamer passed, the swaying of the boom caused him to fall into deep water. The current drew him 50 feet from the boom, and he floundered helplessly. Homer, 13, schoolboy, ran 40 feet, dived, and swam rapidly toward Davidson. When he reached him, he grasped his arm and supported him. Men who had been attracted by cries cast a plank toward Homer, and he swam 15 feet to it. With the assistance of the plank, which he put between him and Davidson, he swam within reach of another plank extended by men on the boom. The men drew Homer and Davidson to the boom and lifted both from the water. Davidson was unconscious, but he was revived. He died a few hours later from hemorrhages. 13285-1025
