Homer W. Carson, 26, driver, saved Lawrence E. Parks, 10, from drowning, Springfield, Oregon, June 18, 1916. Parks was wading in the McKenzie River but lost his footing and was carried away by the current. Carson ran 600 feet, entered the water heavily dressed, and swam and was carried by the current 65 feet to Parks. Parks grasped him around the neck and submerged him, but Carson broke his hold and swam 60 feet toward the bank with him. Carson then called that he could not make it, but a man waded out from the bank, extended a stick to Carson, and drew him and Parks to shallow water. 16644-1353
