Horace M. Parham died attempting to save Thomas Johnson from suffocation, Mableton, Georgia, August 10, 1914. Johnson, 23, farmhand, was overcome by noxious gas in a well 35 feet deep. Parham, 43, farmer, who had on previous occasions had severe headaches after having worked in the well, at once descended into the well by means of niches in the walls. A young man who remained at the top called loudly and attracted Parham’s brother. Parham tied a rope around Johnson and told the man at the top to pull. The rope slipped from Johnson after he had been raised some distance, and he fell back to the bottom of the well. After that, no word was heard from Parham. Forty minutes later a man reached the well and descended. He tied the rope around Johnson, who was drawn up. Twenty minutes later another man reached the well and descended for Parham. Parham was hoisted, but he could not be revived. 13852-1137
